■Michelle Mendoza, KAMA Voice teacher, soprano

■Mitch Iimori, banjo & guitar

■Noreen Murdock, piano

Come enjoy a fun-filled and intimate evening of American music! Soprano Michelle Mendoza and pianist Noreen Murdock will perform a selection of songs by Aaron Copland, George Gershwin, and other arrangements of American folk songs. SCO’s principal oboist Mitch Iimori, known as the “Multi-Instrumentalist”, will join the program to play some favorite tunes on the banjo and guitar. You’ll even have the opportunity to sing along! After the recital, enjoy a reception of autumn treats – caramel apple bites, pumpkin pie, hot apple cider, and Starbucks coffee! Proceeds benefit the Salem Chamber Orchestra.

Michelle Mendoza graduated from Willamette University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education, where she studied voice with Allison Swensen-Mitchell. Ms. Mendoza performed with the Salem Chamber Orchestra as a winner of the Willamette Solo & Aria Competition in both 2005 and 2006. Ms. Mendoza currently sings with the Willamette Master Chorus and teaches voice at Keizer Academy of Music & Arts. Roles: Fiordiligi, Così Fan Tutte (2009), title role, Suor Angelica (2007), Countess, Act II of The Marriage of Figaro (2006), all at Willamette University.

In addition to being Executive Director of Salem Chamber Orchestra, Noreen Murdock is an accomplished pianist. A graduate of Willamette University music program, she has participated in the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz (2007), was a staff accompanist at Willamette University from 2005-2008, and was the accompanist/coach for the Dramatic Vocal Arts (opera) program there. She coached Willamette’s productions of Suor Angelica, die Fledermaus, Cosi fan tutte, and accompanied several opera scenes productions.

Mitch Iimori, SCO’s principal oboist since 2000, was born and raised in Kanagawa, Japan. He started playing the piano at age seven, and classical guitar at eight. Later he taught himself banjo and it has been his main instrument to this day. He reluctantly picked up oboe at age 13 by his older brother’s command. He graduated from Eastman School of Music with a Bachelor of Music. Mitch now plays over 50 instruments and performs at least ten instruments professionally (check out his MySpace page, “Mitch, the Ultimate Multi-Instrumentalist”). You may have heard him outside the SCO; his flute and clarinet are heard daily on OPB in the theme music for “Oregon Experience.”

Silk Mountain Project: Danny Seidenberg & Daryl Silberman, violas; Noah Seitz, cello; and Chris Woitach, guitar

The Silk Mountain Project was created in 2009 to advance the cause of chamber jazz/pop/rock improvisational crossover styles played by strings… and in particular to celebrate the unique voice of the viola. There’s a style for everyone, a fun and eclectic mix. Silk Mountain is the English translation of the name “Seidenberg.” It all finds inspiration in the beautiful mountains of Oregon.

Also enjoy readings from author Jessica Maxwell’s new book, Roll Around Heaven. Ms. Maxwell’s book is currently the best-selling spiritual book at Powell’s Books! She will be on hand to custom autograph your new copy, and a portion of all books sold that night will be donated to Salem Chamber Orchestra! Also, the first twelve people to buy a book gets a special treat courtesy of Itsy Bitsy Bakeshop.

Check out Willamette Master Chorus's upcoming performances too!  KAMA voice teacher, Michelle Mendoza sings alto in the choir.

Keizer Big Band!

I'd like to invite you to a great band concert this Sunday, Nov. 8 at 3 PM in Russell Tripp Performance Center, located in Takena Hall, on the campus of Linn Benton Community College just south of Albany on Highway 99E. The free concert is the annual Veterans Day Patriotic Pops Concert with a theme of Popular Music of World Wars I and II. Featured guest soloists will be The Girls from Company B, a vocal trio of three young women who have music degrees from WOU, who specialize in the recreation of the sound and songs of the popular Andrews Sisters of the 1940's. The group will sing Rum and Coca Cola, Stardust and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. Selections from World War I will include a medley of popular songs from that era: Keep the Home Fires Burning , It's a Long, Long Way to Tipperary and George M. Cohan's Over There. The band will also play Sabre and Spurs March and Willow Blossoms written by John Philip Sousa.

Music from the World War II era will include Victory at Sea by Richard Rodgers and The Homefront: Musical Memories from World War II. Also included will be In The Miller Mood, a medley of well known Glenn Miller Band tunes featuring a group of saxophones and clarinet in the Miller style. Also on the program will be Big Band Dixie featuring a small Dixieland combo playing tunes popular during WW I and II.

More traditional Veterans Day music will include: Eternal Father Strong to Save by Claude Smith, a stirring arrangement of the U.S.. Naval Hymn; Where Valor Proudly Sleeps, illustrating composer Robert Longfield's musical impressions of a visit to Arlington National Cemetery and American Anthem by Scheer, from the soundtrack to the Ken Burns TV documentary, The War, a history of WW II. There will also be a salute to membership of the U.S. Armed Forces with the playing of each of the branch's official songs.

The band will also play marches by Sousa and Alford including Stars and Stripes Forever.

The concert is sponsored by Russell and Duffy Tripp but donations will gladly be accepted after the concert to help continue the band's patriotic concerts that honor military veterans.

The Willamette Valley Concert Band, a community ensemble based in Albany, was formed in 1970. Its membership includes about 55 musicians ranging from teens to senior citizens from Benton, Linn, Marion and Polk counties.

The band director and assistant director are, respectively, Dr. Richard Sorenson, emeritus director of bands at WOU and Christine Barreto, a retired Lebanon music teacher.

Hope to see you at the concert.

Of the Keizertimes

Noah and Sara are so darn happy these days they're practically bouncing off the walls.

And why not? They're so close to their dream they can hear it, feel it, see it.

Noah Seitz and Sara Greenleaf-Seitz are opening the Keizer Academy of Music and Arts at 4904 River Road N. in Keizer Plaza. The school is taking registrations now, and formal classes begin September 8.

The concept behind the academy is unifying the arts: An impressive array of classes are proposed, including group and private music lessons, photography, dance and acting.

"This is a collaborative environment for both students and teachers," Sara said.

"It'd be cool to have an event where students could do a collaborative recital, where the students are playing music, the dancers are dancing," said Noah.

Both of the two make a living off their music, holding degrees in music performance – Sara on piano, Noah on cello – from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. Noah would go on to study at the University of Oregon, while Sara was an accompanying pianist there. She currently works as a piano accompanist at Linfield College, while Noah teaches at schools in the Salem-Keizer area.

But their dream was to do what Sara's best friend Tia Pietsch did in Homer, Alaska: Open a music and arts academy.

Sara was also running a piano studio in their Keizer home, but in speaking with other private music teachers she found a common thread: Houses of any kind provided too many distractions, and often teachers were traveling to each student's home, spending as much time on the road as they were teaching.

"That's when we realized if we were going to do music full-time professionally, it needed to be more convenient and more streamlined for all involved," Sara said.

Teachers working privately not only have to impart musical wisdom, but have to also be familiar with running a business. While most of the teachers will be private contractors, Sara said it will help instructors focus on their love of music – "they don't have to do scheduling or collect tuition."

It's not just better for teachers to have a base for lessons, Sara said. For frazzled parents running their kids all over town for activities, Sara said KAMA could be almost a godsend.

"If one kid takes piano and another guitar, you can drop them off here in one shot," she said.

The couple lives in Keizer with their daughters Lilla, 7, and Clara, 3. They chose Keizer in part because of the Salem-Keizer School District's impressive music programs.

"If every student in those programs has a private teacher they'll get even better," Sara said.

High on the list of priorities is hiring prescreen teachers with university training. Many of the teachers are currently music students themselves at area colleges. Facilities include a dance studio, several rooms for private music lessons, and a Yamaha full grand piano.

While both are steeped in musical experience, Sara also has dance experience from accompanying ballet recitals on piano.

"Dance and piano are already combined in some sense of the word," Sara said. "Students can have that experience of crossing over into other arts."

The word "collaborative" comes up a lot when discussing the couple's decision to include as many arts as possible under one roof.

Acting courses are available for children, teens and adults. In the area of music, students can take private or group lessons on guitar or piano as well as any common band instrument you can think of. Music theory and voice courses are also available.

Dance classes start for students as young as 3 years old, and includes ballet and modern dance. Yoga classes for almost every age group are also on the table.

Lessons are one-on-one, and no class will have more than a 15-1 ratio. Currently about 20 teachers have signed on to teach at the school.

"Most of our teachers are still working in their field," Sara said. "That was really important to me. Students need to see that their teacher loves performing and isn't afraid to put themselves on the line. Why should a student put himself on the line if a teacher won't?"

Most private lesson students will also get a 15-minute music theory training by computer.

And as big as this dream has been, they're thinking even bigger. In a few years they'd like to be in a facility where they can host performances, or bring in art shows.

"Keizer deserves to have a beautiful space to hear music, see art and watch professional dance troupes," Sara said.

Scholarships were awarded to two local students: Ali Zuro of McNary High and homeschooler Jessica Ries. Both won a full year of lessons or classes via an essay contest. The school also plans to offer a bring-a-friend referral program to help defer student costs.
